Sky confirms Spanish OTT plans by end of 2017

Sky confirms Spanish OTT plans by end of 2017

Sky is to move ahead with a direct to consumer service for the Spanish market. The long-anticipated OTT platform will launch before the end of 2017.

“We intend to launch a simple and affordable OTT service in Spain, the Eurozone’s fourth largest economy and the market which has the largest free-to-air (FTA) headroom in Europe outside of our existing footprint,” CEO Jeremy Darroch confirmed to analysts Thursday.

The move comes as Sky plans to roll out a satellite-free version of its Sky Q box to Italy, Germany and Austria.

The Sky Q box is now in 1 million UK homes with 22 per cent of new subscribers opting for the £12 monthly fee that brings additional multiscreen functionality.

Premier League Wins New Stream Blocking Injunction

Premier League Wins New Stream Blocking Injunction

The High Court has issued a 'blocking order' that will cut off online streams for people who are illegally watching Premier League football matches.

It comes after the Premier League was awarded a High Court blocking order for the forthcoming 2017-18 season.

Dubbed the 'biggest ever crackdown' on illegal streaming, the order will help the league intensify its crackdown on the illicit use of pre-loaded Kodi boxes.

“This blocking order is a game-changer in our efforts to tackle the supply and use of illicit streams of our content,” said Premier League Director of Legal Services, Kevin Plumb.

“It will allow us to quickly and effectively block and disrupt the illegal broadcast of Premier League football via any means, including so called ‘pre-loaded Kodi boxes’.”

Although the details of the new injunction are yet to be published by the High Court, the EPL indicates that the injunction is very similar to the one obtained previously, which targets overseas servers streaming Premier League matches into the UK.

In the 2016-17 season the Premier League obtained a similar order for the last two months of the season.

The court order allowed Premier League bosses to blanket block internet servers.

Around 5,000 server IP addresses were blocked as a result.

BBC announces details of its free-to-air US PGA coverage

BBC announces details of its free-to-air US PGA coverage

As mentioned in our previous post (http://www.satandpcguy.com/2017/07/19/bbc-wins-rights-to-us-pga-championship/ ) , the BBC has announces details of its free-to-air US PGA coverage.

The new BBC deal for this year's US PGA Championships comes after Sky lost the rights to the Golfing event earlier this month.

Having obtained the rights to the event at short notice, and due to it clashing with pre-planned live coverage of the World Athletics Championships and BBC Proms, most of the live coverage will appear on BBC Red Button, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport Online between 10th and 13th August 2017.

BBC Two will pick up the conclusion of each day's play during the late evening UK time. TV coverage will be presented by Eilidh Barbour, alongside the best known voices of the game; Peter Alliss and Ken Brown.

BBC Radio 5 live and 5 Live Sports Extra will also again broadcast live from the Championship, led by Iain Carter and Jay Townsend.

The US PGA joins the BBC’s golf portfolio which also includes live radio and extended TV highlights of the Women’s British Open at Kingsbarns between 3-6 August.

Kodi Security Risk Emerges After TVAddons Shutdown

Kodi Security Risk Emerges After TVAddons Shutdown
From : torrentfreak

Three domains previously operated by defunct Kodi addons site TVAddons have been transferred to a law firm in Canada.

Security implications cannot be ignored.

According to a Kodi Project Manager, a third party in control of these domains could potentially do whatever they wanted to vulnerable former TVAddons users.

Recently several key TVAddons domains were transferred to a Canadian law firm. TVAddons, who have effectively disappeared, made no comment.

But there is a bigger issue at play here for millions of former TVAddons users who haven’t yet wiped their devices or upgraded them to work with other repositories.

Without going into huge technical detail, any user of an augmented Kodi device that relied on TVAddons domains (TVAddons.ag, Offshoregit.com) for updates can be reasonably confident that the domains their device is now accessing are not controlled by TVAddons anymore. That is not good news.

Any person in control of a repo can make a Kodi addon available that can do pretty much anything.

Consider this.

TVAddons’ domains are now being run by a law firm which refuses to answer questions but has the power to do whatever it likes with them, within the law of course.

TorrentFreak spoke to Kodi Project Manager Nathan Betzen who agrees that the current security situation probably isn’t what former TVAddons users had in mind.

“These are unsandboxed Python addons. The person [in control of] the repo could do whatever they wanted. You guys wrote about the addon that created a DDoS event,” Betzen says.

“If some malware author wanted, he could easily install a watcher that reports back the user’s IP address and everything they were doing in Kodi. If the law firm is actually an anti-piracy group, that seems like the likeliest thing I can think of,” he adds.

EU Content Portability rules now in place

EU Content Portability rules now in place

Rules surrounding the right of the consumer to view pay-TV content in any European territory have been officially approved.

Regulation (EU) 2017/1128 entered into law on Thursday and will become officially enforceable as of March 20, 2018.

It means EU citizens can use online services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify and Deezer while in another EU country for holidays, studies or business.

Access is limited to online services such as films, TV series, music, games, or sporting events, which they have paid for in their home country, and does not include cross-border reception of satellite-delivered services.

However, public service broadcasters, which are financed by broadcasting fees, may decide to enable its subscribers who are temporarily present in a member state to access and use the online content service on condition that the provider verifies the subscriber’s member state of residence in accordance with this regulation.

BBC wins rights to US PGA Championship

BBC wins rights to US PGA Championship

Reports in the Guardian suggest the BBC has won the race for live UK coverage of the US PGA Championship in a shock deal which could be announced before the end of this week.

The Guardian revealed last week that Sky Sports had lost live rights to the final major of the year after talks broke down with the PGA of America. The tournament organisers promised a “multi platform” alternative but at least an element of live television coverage was also always likely. Sky was obviously embarrassed by news breaking of their US PGA scenario days after it announced the forthcoming unveiling of a dedicated golf channel.

Should the BBC confirm its US PGA deal in Open week, further red faces will ensue at Sky. This marks only the second Open shown live by the satellite channel, in a move from the BBC deemed highly controversial at the time.

Sky’s still have not reached an agreement to extend their existing contract to show all four days of the Masters exclusively live.

One complication relating to the BBC’s new major agreement relates to a clash with the world athletics championships, which the corporation was already committed to covering. However, it is believed that is not problematic with a combination of linear television channels and the BBC red button being utilised.

Premier League games could be streamed online in a bid to end illegal broadcasts

Premier League games could be streamed online in a bid to end illegal broadcasts

Premier League bosses are debating whether to livestream games directly in a bid to end illegal streams, rumours suggest.

Organisers are considering whether streaming matches in the US and UK would significantly cut the value of its multi-billion-pound TV deals, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

As many as a third of football fans watch the sport illegally, with many streaming games via illicit websites or through prohibited add-ons to so-called Kodi boxes.

Should the League decide to start streaming matches it could give current Kodi box users a new way to watch football online without fear of legal action.

Premier League chiefs are keen to offer options that reduce the number of people who illegally stream games, a figure that has dramatically risen in recent years.

But organisers are reluctant to do anything that saps the value from the £8.2 billion ($10.6 billion) broadcasters paid to show matches between 2016 and 2019, Digiday reports.

There is a growing recognition at the organisation that livestreaming could help to address an imbalance in the current broadcast model.
While rights fees for matches are soaring, viewing figures for sports broadcasters such as Sky and NBC are plummeting. Last season saw the biggest fall in live Premier League TV viewing figures for seven years, with both Sky and BT hit by the drop.
Sky saw a 14 per cent fall in viewing numbers, while BT channels dropped by 2 per cent.
