How Sky Is Reducing World Cup Streaming Delays

 One of the biggest complaints about streaming live football has never been picture quality or reliability—it's the delay.

For years, viewers watching through streaming platforms have had to put up with hearing neighbours celebrate goals before they appeared on screen, or seeing goal alerts on their phones several seconds before the action unfolded on their television.

Why Streaming Has Always Been Behind

For the World Cup, Sky introduced dedicated Real Time versions of the BBC and ITV channels available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream.

These special channels use low-latency streaming technology to reduce the delay between the live event and what viewers see on screen.

Rather than using the standard streaming pipeline, Real Time minimises buffering and optimises video delivery, allowing matches to appear much closer to live.

The service includes dedicated Real Time versions of:

  • ITV1 (plus STV and UTV where appropriate)
  • ITV4

How Much Faster Is It?

Sky says the Real Time channels reduce latency by more than 20 seconds compared with its standard streaming channels.

In practice, this means many viewers watching through Sky Stream or Sky Glass are now only a few seconds behind traditional broadcast television, rather than half a minute or more.

For football fans, that's a significant improvement.

It reduces the chance of hearing neighbours celebrating early, receiving goal notifications before the action, or having social media spoil key moments.

There Is a Trade-Off

Reducing delay isn't free.

The reason traditional streaming can pause and rewind live television is because it constantly stores video in a playback buffer.

Real Time dramatically reduces that buffer.

As a result, several familiar features are unavailable while watching these channels, including:

  • Pause Live TV
  • Rewind Live TV
  • Restart Programme

These functions all depend on having several seconds—or even minutes—of video stored locally.

Removing much of that stored content is exactly what allows Real Time to get viewers closer to the live action.

A Faster Stream Needs Better Broadband

Because there is less buffering to hide fluctuations in internet performance, Sky recommends a faster and more stable broadband connection for Real Time viewing.

Its guidance suggests:

  • 25 Mbps for standard HD streaming
  • 30 Mbps for UHD streaming
  • 40 Mbps for Real Time streaming

If your broadband connection is unstable, the standard versions of the channels may actually provide a smoother viewing experience because they have a larger playback buffer to absorb short interruptions.

Why This Matters for Sky

The launch of Real Time is significant for another reason.

For years, one of satellite television's biggest advantages has been lower latency during live sport.

Sky has been encouraging customers to migrate from Sky Q satellite receivers to Sky Stream and Sky Glass, but many football fans remained reluctant because of streaming delays.

Real Time is designed to remove one of the last major technical advantages that satellite broadcasting still enjoys.

If Sky can consistently deliver live sport within only a few seconds of satellite television, one of the biggest objections to internet-only television largely disappears.

The BBC and ITV Are Also Working on Latency

Sky isn't alone in trying to solve the problem.

The BBC has spent several years reducing latency on BBC iPlayer and has been trialling low-latency streaming during major sporting events such as Wimbledon. ITV has also confirmed it has been actively working to reduce delays, particularly as more viewers move to ITVX for live football coverage.

Together, these developments suggest that low-latency streaming is becoming a major priority across the broadcasting industry, especially for high-profile live sport.

A Glimpse of Television's Future

Although Real Time was introduced specifically for World Cup coverage, its importance extends well beyond one tournament.

As broadcasters continue shifting towards internet delivery, viewers will increasingly expect streaming services to match the immediacy of traditional broadcast television.

If Real Time proves successful, similar low-latency technology could eventually become available for:
