Every summer, the same question starts appearing on satellite TV forums and in Facebook groups for UK expats living in Spain.
"Why have some of my UK TV channels suddenly disappeared?"
The timing is remarkably predictable. As temperatures climb into the mid-30s—or even above 40°C in some parts of Spain—certain UK television channels begin to pixelate, freeze or vanish altogether. Then, later in the evening, they often return as if nothing had happened.
If you've experienced this, you're certainly not alone.
The good news is that your satellite receiver probably isn't faulty. In most cases, the problem is caused by a combination of extreme summer weather and the fact that UK satellite signals are already operating close to their reception limits in many parts of Spain.
Why Does Heat Affect Satellite TV?
Satellite television signals travel around 36,000 kilometres from satellites in geostationary orbit before reaching your dish.
By the time UK spot beam signals arrive in southern Europe, they are considerably weaker than they are across the UK.
That means many viewers in areas such as the Costa Blanca, Valencia, Murcia and parts of Andalucía are already receiving signals with very little margin for error.
When temperatures rise, the atmosphere changes too.
Higher temperatures and increased humidity can slightly weaken satellite signals as they pass through the atmosphere. Although the effect is relatively small, it can be enough to push already weak signals below the level needed for reliable reception.
This is why reception problems often become noticeable during the hottest part of the afternoon before improving again after sunset.
Why Are Only Some Channels Affected?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that if heat affects satellite reception, every channel should disappear.
In reality, different channels are transmitted using different satellite transponders and signal strengths.
The channels that usually fail first are those already being received with the weakest signal.
These often include:
- U&Dave
- U&Drama
- U&Yesterday
- U&GOLD
- U&W
- Some Channel 4 HD regional services
- Quest
- DMAX
- Food Network
For many viewers, BBC One HD or ITV1 HD may continue working perfectly while several of the channels listed above begin breaking up or disappear completely.
Your Equipment Can Also Feel the Heat
It's not just the atmosphere causing problems.
Satellite equipment spends all day sitting in direct sunlight.
The LNB—the small electronic unit mounted on the front of the dish—is particularly exposed. On a hot summer's day, its temperature can become far higher than the surrounding air.
Electronic components generally become less efficient as temperatures rise, and an ageing or lower-quality LNB may produce more electrical noise, making already weak signals even harder for the receiver to decode.
Satellite dishes can also expand slightly in extreme heat. Although the movement is tiny, even a very small change in alignment can reduce signal quality if the installation was already only just within tolerance.
Why Larger Dishes Usually Cope Better
This is one reason why larger satellite dishes generally perform much better during the Spanish summer.
A larger dish collects more signal, providing extra "rain fade" and "heat fade" margin.
Even if atmospheric conditions reduce the signal slightly, there's still enough strength reaching the receiver for reliable viewing.
Smaller dishes, or installations that weren't perfectly aligned to begin with, tend to experience problems much sooner.
That's why two neighbouring houses can have completely different viewing experiences despite pointing at the same satellite.
Humidity Can Be Just as Important
Many viewers blame temperature alone.
However, humidity often plays an equally important role.
Warm, moisture-laden air can absorb and scatter microwave signals more than cooler, drier air. During particularly humid afternoons, especially near the Mediterranean coast, this can further reduce already marginal satellite reception.
This also explains why reception often improves later in the evening as temperatures fall and atmospheric conditions become more stable.
Can Anything Be Done?
In many cases, yes.
If you're regularly losing channels every summer, there are several things worth checking:
- Ensure your satellite dish is accurately aligned.
- Replace an old or failing LNB with a modern, high-quality model.
- Check that all cables and connectors remain waterproof and corrosion-free.
- Consider upgrading to a larger satellite dish if you live in a weak signal area.
- Trim any vegetation that may have grown into the signal path.
A professional realignment can often recover valuable signal margin that has gradually been lost over time.
Don't Retune Your Receiver
One common mistake is to retune your satellite receiver when channels disappear.
If the problem is caused by weak reception rather than changes to the broadcasts themselves, retuning is unlikely to help and may even remove channels from your channel list until reception improves.
Instead, wait until temperatures fall later in the day. If the channels return, you've almost certainly experienced a weather-related reception issue rather than a fault with your equipment.
A Predictable Summer Problem
For thousands of UK expats across Spain, this is now an almost annual event.
Every summer, weaker UK channels become the first casualties of prolonged hot weather, while stronger services continue working normally.
Fortunately, in most cases the problem is temporary. As evening arrives and temperatures begin to fall, reception usually improves and the missing channels return.
If the issue becomes increasingly frequent year after year, however, it may be a sign that your satellite installation is operating with very little spare signal margin. Upgrading your dish, replacing an ageing LNB or simply having the system professionally realigned can often make a dramatic difference.
So, if your favourite UK channels start disappearing during the next Spanish heatwave, don't panic. It's probably not your receiver, and it almost certainly isn't the broadcaster. More often than not, it's simply the combination of extreme summer weather and the challenge of receiving UK-focused satellite beams hundreds of miles beyond their intended coverage area.
