Japan to start 4K "Ultra HD" TV in July 2014

Japan will start the world’s first 4K TV broadcast in July 2014, two years earlier than originally planned.

According to the Asahi Times, the Japanese ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has decided to start broadcasting in 4k during the finals of the football World Cup in Brazil in July 2014.

The first broadcasts will be transmitted via the country’s communication satellites rather than via the direct broadcast satellites. However, usage of BS satellites is planned at a later stage.

Originally, the Japanese were planning to launch 4K broadcast in 2016. The move to bring the world’s first regular 4K broadcasts” forward is intended to boast 4K television set sales. The UltraHD televisions are now on sale by Japanese makers including Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and Sharp as well as from Korean manufacturers such as LG.

Forget 3D TV! Now 4K TVs are the latest must-have (but with a £25,000 price tag!)

It was not so long ago that we had to exchange our old box televisions for flat-screens.

And then there were the endless upgrades to high definition and screens that could show 3D images.

But it seems it could all have be in vain as the technology is already out of date through the arrival of the 4K picture.

The ultra-high quality definition is four times as sharp as standard quality high definition and is close to that viewed only in an Imax cinema.

However, for those wishing to view the latest picture in their own living room, they must have plenty of room available for the 84inch screen and plenty of spare cash.

Sony has brought out a model that is more than 7ft wide and can play the new technology. Costing £25,000, only Harrods in central London currently sells the television.

The giant screen can convert ordinary television into 3D, and comes with five pairs of glasses for viewing the pin-sharp images.

Even without 3D, the ultra-high definition images are 16 times sharper than those on a normal television.

Experts say the television's picture is so technologically advanced that few broadcasters can yet take advantage of its full potential.

It may also solve family arguments. The screen is so large that it can be split, allowing viewers to watch two movies at once - and it has voice-activated and motion controls, putting an end to fruitless searches for the remote.

Those preferring something more discreet might wish to wait for the 65-inch version or even the dinky 55-inch, which will be in the shops this summer.

The emergence of 4K comes as the BBC is preparing to film it's next meerkat natural history programme using the new technology.

The series, being made by the BBC's Natural History Unit in Bristol, will show how animals go through the same basic life stages as humans.

'We are looking at six ages of man as seen through animal lives,' Mike Gunton, creative director of the NHU, told The Independent.

'It's looking at the trials and tribulations that animals face at different stages of their lives and how different species have different solutions - from birth, to growing up, to adolescence, to finding their first home, to finding their place in the social hierarchy, to getting a mate and finally having offspring of their own.

'There's a new reality which those images give. I think it makes the images more engaging. You feel you can almost touch them and get into the heads of the animals.'

Eurosport HD and Eurosport 2 HD available with a Sky HD subscription TCM HD is now live on Sky channel 317. TCM SD has moved to 341. (for HD viewers).

An update on the new C4HD frequency:

an update on the new C4HD frequency:

C4HD may only just be available to users with a 80cm satellite dish here in Spain, but not for all day.

And there are reports that even on 2,4m satellite dishes, that C4HD can be lost for an hour or so between 3 and 6pm.

Why? Well according to reports,. C4HDs frequency of 12606v is similar to that on another satellite. In fringe reception areas, like the Med and Costa Blanca areas, the frequency of the other satellite is a lot stronger than that for C4HD, and so C4HD loses the battle of the frequencies. Even a big dish may not be the answer as strangely a big satellite dish will actually be able to receive more of the "unwanted" frequency!

Two CBS HD coming channels soon....

CBS, the mass media broadcasting company have been granted licenses for two new high-definition channels, CBS Action HD and CBS Drama HD.

The standard-definition counterparts are already broadcasted on Freesat (channel 137 and 134) and on Sky (channels 148 and 149).

CBS have always been known as a ‘free’ channel broadcaster in this country, with the majority of their channels FTA (free-to-air) available on both Freesat and Sky.

Itis unclear if these will be available for free (on Freesat), or if they will require a Sky HD subscription to view.

If they do lauch free to air then it would be a massive boost to Freesat , which presently only has 3 HD channels on the EPG; BBC1 HD, BBC HD and ITV1 HD.

The brand new HD channel will launch on Wednesday 3rd November at 7pm, with an evening jam-packed with programmes filmed in true HD. Much of BBC One peak time schedule will now be filmed in true HD, including favourites like The Apprentice, Strictly Come Dancing, Children in Need, Antiques Roadshow, Countryfile, The Graham Norton Show and The Royal Variety Show.

In addition, BBCHD channel will continue to be home to great drama, comedy, music and factual programmes from BBC TWO, THREE and FOUR, all in stunning HD, plus for the first time some Moto GP races.

[B]Important news for freesat customers[/B]

You can expect to see BBC One HD added to the EPG at Channel 108 from 7pm onwards on Wednesday 3rd November. BBC HD channel will move to Channel 109. These changes will update automatically on freesat boxes and TVs.

To prompt these changes after 7pm, put your box or TV into standby for one minute, and then turn it back on. The EPG will then update. Customers with Humax boxes and LG TVs will need to accept the new channel prompt.

The Simpsons in HD on Antena 3 HD on Spanish Digital TV

Antena 3 has announced that the new season of the Simpsons, wil be broadcast in 16:9 widescreen format and native HD.

This Tuesday September 28 Antena 3 will launch its new channel, a simulcast of the Antean 3 channel in HD

This announcement was made on the same day that Telecinco HD was announced as the first private channel to adopt this format. In some areas Telecinco HD is already available.

BBC to show The Open in HD

The BBC has confirmed plans to show The Open Championship in high definition for the first time.

For the 150th anniversary of The Open, the BBC will broadcast 40 hours of live coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC HD, starting on July 15 at 9am. There will also be 40 hours of content available via the Red Button.

The BBC's coverage team will once more be led by Hazel Irvine, with expert analysis coming from Peter Alliss, Ken Brown, Sam Torrance, Mark James, Wayne Grady and Andrew Cotter.

For 2010, French golfer Jean Van de Velde will join the on-course team of Maureen Madill and Philip Parkin, with reports coming from Dan Walker, Shane O'Donaghue and Russell Fuller.

Before the action gets underway, BBC Two will air a one-hour highlights programme from The Open's anniversary special event, The Open Champions Challenge, on July 15 from 7pm.

The challenge, which features past Open winners such as Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods, will also be made available via the Red Button between 3.30pm and 6pm.

BBC Sport Online will carry live streaming of the network feed (for UK users only), along with highlights, live leaderboards and video clips. All coverage will also be made available on BBC iPlayer after transmission.

BBC Radio 5 Live will broadcast extensive coverage from The Open, with John Inverdale presenting live from the event every day.

Sky Sports price increase by £3 pm from Sept 2010

According to reports, as part of its annual priceing review, Sky Sports package will be increasing.

The cost of receiving Sky Sport 1 and Sky Sports 2 will increase by £3 per month from 1st September 2010.

Sky Sports 3 and 4 are "bonus" channels for those who subscribbe to both 1 and 2.

Sky are saying that this is due to the fact that the are showing more live sport then ever before, and 115 live Premier League games with the return of Monday Night Football.

There hsa been no word yet about increases for other packages - but generally every Spetember Sky increase their prices by £1...last year one or two packages prices were reduced.

There are also rumours that this autumn Sky will be reviewing and changing their HD channel policy.

Television has advanced a great deal in recent years, mainly due to the advancement of digital technology in the digital age.

The History of Television

Not so long ago the UK only had 4 television channels.

Now there are hundreds of channels available, available via your TV aerial, satellite, cable and Internet on digital television

Analogue vs Digital Television

Then televisions themselves changed as technology advanced.

From the old cathode ray tubes, to widescreen televisions, to plasma, LCD and now LED.

And then the channels again advanced.

From Widescreen, to high definition, and now to 3D, with Sky launching Europes first High Definition 3D television channel.

Which Satellite receiver do you use for UK TV In Spain?

It just to see what sort of receivers people are using in the Costa Blanca and Spain...

and if there is a particular make that is dominant,
is HD really making an impact,
are PVRs (eg Sky+) popular,
are Freesat receivers as popular as it was thought it would be.

I understand that they all have their advantages and disadvantages
