New channels coming to Freesat soon..?

New channels coming to Freesat soon..?

We mentioned in a recent post ( http://www.satandpcguy.com/blog/2015/11/possible-satellite-changes-for-the-uktv-group-of-channels/ ) that some of the UKTV group of channels had been duplicated on a UK beam frequency.

Speculation arose as to what this has meant. And, although there has been no official confirmation, it does appear as if Freesat will soon be getting some more channels.

UK Freeview is NOT available in Spain

UK Freeview is not available in Spain, despite UK TV installers other people in Spain saying UK Freeview IS available in Spain.

UK Freeview is only available in the UK.

UK Freeview is received by a TV aerial in the UK.

UK Freeview is transmitted from land based mast in the UK, masts such as Emley Moor and Crystal Palace.

UK Freeview signals do not reach Spain. They do not even cover the UK 100%!

UK Freeview cannot be received by a satellite dish. They are two different broadcast systems.

Latest UK satellite TV changes - Freesat Guide moves to the UK beam

Latest UK satellite TV changes.

IMPORTANT : The Freesat guide has now moved to the UK beam.

If you cannot receive BBC or ITV channels, then you may not be able to receive the Freesat Guide, and your Freesat box may not function correctly.

Hopefully, most people in my service area should be OK. It will affect those using Freesat receivers in the south of Spain, and Portugal.

How can I watch Freeview in Spain?

How can I watch Freeview in Spain?

The simple answer is that you cannot watch freeview in Spain.

This is because you cannot receive the freeview signals in Spain.

Why?

Freeview is transmitted in the UK by the local TV transmitters and is received by a TV aerial. The freeview transmissions from the TV transmitter masts simply do not reach Spain. In fact the freeview transmissions do not actual cover the UK 100% either!

The nearest freeview transmitter to Spain is in the Channel Islands. But again the transmission from this mast are simply not strong enough to reach Spain.

So you cannot receive freeview in Spain.

More information on freeview available here:

However, many of the channels on freeview are available on Freesat, which is available in Spain.

Freesat is transmitted from satellites and are received using a satellite dish. Freesat was designed to help in provide digital TV in the UK for areas that could not receive freeview signals.

More information on freeview available here:

Freeview is not the same as Freesat – a common misconception.

Even by some satellite installers here in Spain do not know the difference and still to this day advertise freeview as being available in Spain.

New channels coming to Freesat - Pick, Challenge and Sky News

Challange, Pick TV and Sky News will be launching on Freesat Monday 3rd December.

They are expected to be on the following Freesat channel numbers.

144 - Pick TV
145 - Challenge
202 - Sky News

Pick and Challenge have only this year been "free to air" and not requiring a Sky card to view.

All three channels have been available to Freesat users in "non freesat mode".

But it now looks like these three channels will now be avilable in Freesat mode.

Why has BBC News changed to BBC Alba on freesat?

Why has BBC News changed to BBC Alba on freesat?

See
http://www.satandpcguy.com/forum/showthread.php?114406-BBC-TV-and-Radio-changes-in-October-2012

The BBC have moved some of their channels around.
BBC3/CBBC will moved from frequency 10773H to frequency 10817V.
BBC News will moved from frequency 10803H to frequency 10817V.
BBC Alba and BBC1 NE&C will moved from frequency 10817V to frequency 10803H.
BBC4/CBeebies will moved from frequency 10803H to frequency 10773H.
BBC Red Button stream 1 will moved from frequency 10954H to frequency 10773H.

These changes should be done automatically by Sky and Freesat receivers

If these chanes have not happened on your Freesat box, or Sky box, then simply reboot the box by unplugging it from the power for 30 seconds.

Some Freesat boxes require you to perofrm a new "freesat" channels scan to make these changes to BBC channels.

BBC Olympic HD stream on Humax Freesat Foxsat boxes...recording issues

If you own a Humax Fresat satellite receiver and are wanting to record from the 24 HD BBC Olympic streams, then I am afraid you are in for disappointment.

It appears that a software glitch by Humax is preventing their Freesat boxes from recording the 24 BBC HD Olympic channels.

Emma Scott, Managing Director Freesat has said
Unfortunately the Humax receivers can’t record the Olympics – we’ve been working with Humax and the BBC on this since the streams went live on Tuesday and no fix can be made. It’s a Humax receiver issue and it’s very frustrating for both Freesat and Humax. All other Freesat+ boxes can record the 24 streams.
We’ve just concluded in the last hour that we can’t resolve the issue without further investigation by Humax. We at Freesat now need to ensure that the platform is as stable as possible during this important summer of sport, so we regretfully have to accept we can’t resolve this for the Olympic period.
Getting the BBC Olympics app working on all Freesat receivers – HD and SD – has been quite a feat of engineering by the team here and at our manufacturers – and of course the BBC themselves. Therefore however frustrating this clearly may be for viewers, we’re hopeful that the option of having the 24 streams available in the first place will be some consolation.
One workaround is to add the Standard Definition channels to non freesat mode and record from non freesat mode.

Another workaround is for the more technical, as it mean having to download and install some new software to your Huamx Freesat+ receivers (see _http://www.avforums.com/forums/freesat/1599048-media-file-server-bundle-foxsat-hdr-release-4-0-part-2-a.html )

Channel 4's 4seven catch-up channel to launch on July 4

Originally posted at www.satandpcguy.com/forum

Channel 4's bold new channel aimed at reinventing catch-up television will launch on all the main UK digital television platforms on July 4, it has been confirmed.

In March, Channel 4 chief executive David Abraham announced 4seven, a new network which will allow viewers to recap on the Channel 4 shows that have caused the most online "buzz" over the past seven days.

For example, active discussion around shows such as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings or US drama Homeland on social media, blogs and online forums would give those programmes another spin on 4seven.
The channel will launch across all major television platforms on July 4, Channel 4 has confirmed.

Channel numbers for Virgin Media and Freesat are not yet known, but it is thought that 4seven will launch at channel 47 on Freeview in post-digital switchover areas, and replace More4 +2 on Sky at position 269 on the EPG.

4seven was met with a decidedly mixed response from Digital Spy readers in March, with many saying that there are already enough ways to catch up on programmes after their live broadcast, including on-demand platform 4oD and personal video recorder (PVR) services, such as Sky+, Freeview+ and Virgin Media TiVo.

However, viewing via video on-demand, PVRs and other means only makes up a relatively small percentage of overall TV viewing, as the majority is still done live while the viewers are sat on the couch with the remote control.

Moreover, many viewers still claim that they are missing the major TV programmes, particularly older audiences, which is a real issue for broadcasters who have invested in the content.

4seven will ensure Channel 4 shows are given maximum chances to reach their audience, but the network is also about more closely integrating the online "buzz" around programmes with the broadcast networks, even incorporating this into the look and feel of 4seven.

Discussing the new approach to catch-up TV in March, David Abraham said: "It's a variation which we think goes with the grain of increased optionality but that combines the continued strengths of digital TV with the opportunities of social media.

"As such we hope that it will be an example of how the TV network will continue to adapt and evolve in order to survive in this most revolutionary of decades for media consumption."

Channel Five, Channel 5 +1, 5 USA and 5* to join freesat, and be free to air

Channel 5 have announced that Channel 5 +1, 5 USA and 5* (plus their +1 timeshift channels) will all be joining the Freesat platform in December.

Channel 5+1 will launch on Freesat on EPG channel number 128 on Tuesday 6th December.
Presumably it will alos launch on the Sky EPG.

5* and 5 USA, as well as their relative +1 services, will also launch on Freesat on Thursday 8th December. The relevent Freesat EPG channel numbers wil be as follows:

129: 5 USA
130: 5 USA +1
131: 5*
132: 5* +1

So, it looks like with 1N available, the fives will be available free to air, with no sky card on a small dish for the foreseeable future.

No mention of Five HD joining Freesat soon.
