BBC Red Button services join Freesat
As previously mentioned ( http://satandpcguy.com/blog/2013/05/bbc-wimbledon-coverage-bbc-red-button-channels ) the BBC have been testing some new channels, or rather BBC Red Button channels.
Presumably this will be for the duration of thee summer so that they can use it for multiple matches during Wimbledon and for their Glastonbury coverage.
In the last few days two of these "BBC Red Button" channels have been added to Freesat receivers.
BBC Red Button 1 HD is now on Freesat channel 980
BBC Red Button 1 SD is now on Freesat channel 981
They are not yet available on a Sky box, but presumably they will be part of the BBC Red Button service via the Red Button Menu, as in previous years.
They can be added NOW to non SKy and non Freesat boxes using the following frequencies:
BBC Red Button 1 SD tagged as '6390' is on 10.773 H 22000
BBC Red Button 1 HD tagged as '8900' is on 11.023 H 23000 HD
In addition, the two other channels tagged as 54380 and 54381 on frequency 12.643 V, SR 27.500, FEC 2/3 and are showing a BBC test loop, and showing BBC Red Button on their programme information banner. They are still showing a BBC test loop. Will this mean more BBC Red button streams using these two channels?

New BBC "test" channel appears on UK TV satellite
A new BBC "channel" is presently testing on Astra 2F at 28.2, tagged as "8900".
It is using the same BBC frequency as some of their other HD channels (BBC1 Wales HD and BBC 1 HD Scotland), of 11023 H, 23000, FEC 2/3 frequency.
It is not available to manually add on SkyHD boxes.
At the moment it is showing BBC2HD content, but the EPG (programme guide) data is showing BBC Red Button data from the Freeview BBC Red Button channel.
Does this mean that the BBC are going to have a BBC Red Button HD service soon?
Perhaps in time for Wimbledon in a few weeks time?
Update: 29/5/13: This channel, tagged as 8900, now has programme data "This is BBC Red Button HD", so it looks this will be used for some red button hd tennis coverage.
In addition, two more "channels" tagged as "54380" and "54381" have appeared on frequency 12.643 V, SR 27.500, FEC 2/3 and are showing a BBC test loop. So perhaps the BBC are temporarily expanding the number of Red Button screens for their Wimbledon coverage?

BBC Red Button streams to be cut to one
As part of the BBC cost cutting drive the number of BBC Red Button video streams on satellite will be reduced to one - on the 15th October. The lone BBC Red Button video stream will be moved from its current frequency (Astra 2A tp 13 11954 H) to a new frequency : Astra 1N tp 45 10773 H 22 5/6
This move will mean the BBC will need to shuffle some of their other TV services around.
BBC TV and Radio Channels Frequency Changes
Early hours of 12 October 2012:
BBC Three / CBBC and BBC News will move to frequency 10818 V 22000 5/6
BBC ALBA and BBC One North East & Cumbria will both move to 10803 H 22000 5/6
BBC Four / CBeebies and BBC Red Button stream 1 will move to 10773 H 22 5/6
Some of the BBC Radio services will also change frequencies and will be split between 10803 H 22 5/6 and 10788 V 22000 5/6
Sky box users and Freesat box users should notice no difference, and these boxes should automatically make the requried frequency changes.
In case they do not, then a simple reboot of the Sky box or Freesat box should correct the problem and load the channels on their new frequencies.
Users of other satellite boxes will have to rescan for these channels on their new frequencies.
Loss of BBC Radio stations for Expats??
This will mean the BBC can close Astra 2A tp 13, which is a Pan European beam. As the BBC statement says:
"This will also mean that our radio services move from a European beam to a UK spot beam as DSat7 is the last of our European beam transponders. We use a UK beam for our TV services, so the radio services will be as available in the UK as our TV services. But it does mean that the radio services will no longer be receivable across much of mainland Europe. I’ve no doubt that some readers of this blog will be disappointed by this news. But I’m afraid European-beam transponders are not cost effective for us. We broadcast our services for UK audiences “in the clear” or unencrypted (which is what makes Freesat possible) and so for rights reasons we are limited in terms of the services that we are able to broadcast on a European beam. The BBC’s radio station for listeners outside the UK is the BBC World Service, and it is widely available throughout the world. In Europe you can receive the World Service in many different ways including on satellite from Eutelsat Hot Bird 8 at 13° East. It’s also available online 24 hours a day via the listen live link from the BBC World Service homepage."

Changes to the BBC Red Button Service from October 2012

They will be reducing the available stream from 5 to one.
This will mean that the BBC will not be able to offer the choice of coverage we have previously and big events will no longer be multi-screen on red button. This will be a disappointment for many viewers, particularly sports fans, who will lose things like multiple Formula 1 screens and table choice for Snooker.

BBC to show NFL American Football LIVE on Monday Night Football
The BBC has reached agreement to broadcast the National Football League’s iconic Monday Night Football for the 2012 season.
Monday Night Football, which launched in the 1970s and helped build the popularity of the NFL in the United States, will be aired live by the BBC on the Red Button and will be streamed live on the BBC Sport website.
The deal means that MNF is now available to fans in the UK on a free-to-air basis. The season kicks off with a double-header next Monday (September 10), with the Cincinnati Bengals travelling to the Baltimore Ravens (kick-off at 12 midnight UK time), followed by the San Diego Chargers facing the Oakland Raiders (kick-off 3.15 a.m.)
Viewers can access BBC’s Red Button service by pressing the red button on their remote from any BBC TV channel on their digital TV (including cable, satellite and Freeview). BBC Online’s coverage will be available via the BBC Sports website at www.bbc.co.uk/sport.
David Murray, Head of Rights, BBC Sport, said: “We look forward to bringing Monday Night Football to our audience, who this summer have shown a great appetite for sport content via our online and red button streams. We’re delighted that our relationship with the NFL continues to grow and we look forward to a great season.”
In addition to MNF, BBC TV will continue to air live coverage of the Super Bowl, which is played in New Orleans on February 3, 2013; highlights of the International Series game between the New England Patriots and St Louis Rams at Wembley on Sunday October 28; and weekly playoff highlights in January. BBC Radio will air at least one live game commentary per week on 5Live Sports Extra, beginning with the season opener between the Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl champion New York Giants at 1.30 a.m. this Wednesday night.
“We are thrilled to be extending our relationship with the BBC in this way,” said Alistair Kirkwood, Managing Director of NFLUK. “Monday Night Football is one of the jewels of the NFL season and the ability for our fans to see it free of charge is very exciting.”
From Week 2 of the season, Monday Night Football will revert to its usual 1.30 a.m. start time. In Week 2 (September 17), viewers will be able to see Peyton Manning lead the Denver Broncos into battle at the Atlanta Falcons, while Week 3 features NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers taking on the Seattle Seahawks.

The Monday Night Football deal completes the package of NFL coverage in the UK for the 2012 season, following previous announcements that:
•Sky Sports will carry Sunday double-headers and all Thursday night games throughout the regular season, plus all postseason games live, as part of a new three-year deal
•Channel 4 will air Sunday Night Football live, this year in HD

BBC Olympic streams - frequencies and channel numbers for Sky and Freesat receivers in Spain
The BBC Olympic sports streams are now available on Sky, Sky HD, Sky+HD, Freesat and Freesat HD receivers.
Sky platform channel numbers are 450-473 for SD and 474-497 for HD
Freesat platform channel numbers are 151-174 with channel number 150 being a "red button" channel
If your Freesat receiver is SD then only SD channels are shown.
If your Freesat receiver is HD then only HD channels are shown.
Reception of the BBC Olympic streams should be good in most areas of Spain. Some of these BBC Olympic channels can be received on an 80cm satellite dish, others will need a 1m satellite dish.
For users of other satellite receivers in Spain, then you will have to manually scan s to add these BBC streams to your receiver.

BBC Olympic Channels on Sky and Freesat digiboxes
The BBC 2012 London Olympic "streaming" channels will be soon made available to Sky and Freesat users.
Sky have said the channels will be added to Sky guide sometime on Monday 23rd July 2012
They will be available from Sky channel 450 upwards.
Freesat have said "All freesat customers will get the 24 live Olympic channels. Just press the red Button, or go to the Olympic genre in the freesat EPG starting at Channel 150. The 24 live channels will be available from 25th July until 12th August, right through the Games. As some events finish, not every BBC Olympic channel will be broadcasting all the time so check the BBC Red Button for what's on when."
Although there is no clear indication as to when exactly they will appear on Freesat, but sometime 23rd or 24th would be good, since it starts on the 25th (days before the opening ceremony!)
For other satellite recievers, the channels will have to be manually added to your channel list

Formula One Grand Prix races on BBC in 2012
Ten races will be shown live on BBC One in 2012, including the British, Monaco and Brazilian grands prix.
The 10 races shown live on BBC One and BBC HD will be: China (15 April), Spain (13 May), Monaco (27 May), Europe (24 June), Britain (8 July), Belgium (2 September), Singapore (23 September), Korea (14 October), Abu Dhabi (4 November) and Brazil (25 November).
There will be extended highlights programmes on BBC One of the other 10, of either 90-minute or two-hour duration depending on the location of the race.
Races in the Far Eastern time zone will have highlights broadcast on BBC One at 2pm, with those in the European time zone getting 90 minutes at 5.30pm.
The BBC's coverage of all the live races will be as extensive as ever, with all the action on and off the track across TV, radio, online, red button and mobile.
There will be full live coverage of both qualifying and race on BBC One, BBC One HD and the BBC Sport website, plus a one-hour evening highlights programme on BBC Three and BBC HD.
For these live BBC races, all three practice sessions will be shown live on the red button and the website.
The F1 Forum will continue on the red button for about an hour of comment and analysis after the programme. It will also be available on the red button and the website after the non-live races.
The presentation team will be at all the races, including those that are not being broadcast live on BBC television.
All 20 grands prix will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 5 live or 5 live sports extra.
The full narrative of every grand prix weekend, including live text and 5 live audio commentary of all on-track sessions as well as news, interviews, pictures and highlights, will also be available on the BBC Sport website.
The BBC Sport website and red button will broadcast live coverage of every second of on-track action for all the races that are live on BBC One and will have highlights of the others.

Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice
I have received an email about the Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice, and thought it would be useful to share the information.
This is a services used by Sky Sports for allowing the viewing of multiple matches, either tennis or football, that are not available on the main Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports 4 channels.
During the US Open Tennis, the match choice allows the viewers to watch the matches on other courts - a bit like when the BBC have Wimbledon on their Multiscreen Sports Interactive streams.
For football, Sky have Match choice, when they show highlights of the days Premier League matches. Although all matches are shown on the main channels, you can still select which of the days matches you want to watch.
Reception of Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 on the Costa Blanca are easily available on a small satellite dish - say an 80cm satellite dish.
Sky Sports 4 (and Sky Sports News) are on a north beam frequency of the Astra 2 satellites. These north beam frequencies are weakest in Spain around 5pm in the afternoon, and even some big 2.4m satellite dishes may struggle to get these Astra 2 satellite frequencies all day.
And the Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice channels are also on these weaker Astra 2 satellite north beam frequencies, and so may not be available all day - especially on small (80cm and 1m) satellite dishes.

This is a services used by Sky Sports for allowing the viewing of multiple matches, either tennis or football, that are not available on the main Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports 4 channels.
During the US Open Tennis, the match choice allows the viewers to watch the matches on other courts - a bit like when the BBC have Wimbledon on their Multiscreen Sports Interactive streams.
For football, Sky have Match choice, when they show highlights of the days Premier League matches. Although all matches are shown on the main channels, you can still select which of the days matches you want to watch.
Reception of Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 on the Costa Blanca are easily available on a small satellite dish - say an 80cm satellite dish.
Sky Sports 4 (and Sky Sports News) are on a north beam frequency of the Astra 2 satellites. These north beam frequencies are weakest in Spain around 5pm in the afternoon, and even some big 2.4m satellite dishes may struggle to get these Astra 2 satellite frequencies all day.
And the Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice channels are also on these weaker Astra 2 satellite north beam frequencies, and so may not be available all day - especially on small (80cm and 1m) satellite dishes.
