Freesat is available in Costa Blanca/ Valencia / Spain on a satellite dish measuring a minimum of 90x100cm (depending on the are you live in).

There are 11 high-definition channels on Freesat: BBC1HD, BBC2HD, BBC3HD, BBC4HD, CBBC HD, CBeebiesHD, BBC News HD, ITV1HD, C4 HD, Russia Today HD (RT HD), NHK HD.

This is a complete list of channels presently available on Freesat.

The region of BBC and ITV you will receive on 101 102 103 119 is determined by the postcode you enter during the set up process of your Freesat digital satellite set top box.

New BBC HD channels to launch - frequencies and channel number details

On Tuesday 10th December the BBC will be launching 5 new HD channels on Freesat HD and Sky HD.

These channels are:
BBC Three HD
BBC Four HD
BBC News HD
CBBC HD
and
CBeebiesHD

Some new BBC HD channels are, according to rumours, expected to launch on the 10th December 2013, on Sky HD and Freesat HD.

The channels have been testing for a few days, indication that they will soon be launched.

Sky HD and Freesat HD channel numbers are still to be confirmed.

Sky HD digiboxes and Freesat HD set top boxes will automatically update to include these new channels.

Users of other satellite receivers will need to perform a channel scan, usually available via the installation menu (check your user manual for details).

New HD channel coming in December : RT HD

RT HD (Russia Today HD), the Russia-based news channel, is set to launch 16th December 2012.

A looped trailer has been playing to state that the service is "starting 16th December".

It is currently unknown if the service will appear on both Sky and Freesat EPGs replacing the current standard definition version for owners of HD receivers.

RT originally launched under the brand "Russia Today" in 2005. The channel reportedly has an annual budget of around $300 million.

A change to the frequency for ITV1 HD Granada has meant some Freesat users may not be able to receive ITV1 HD Granada.

The solution to the loss of ITV1 HD Granada on Freesat HD boxes to simply perform a Freesat channel scan. The Freesat channel scan should pick up the new frequency parameters for ITV1 HD Granada.

ITV1 HD Granada new frequency is 10.936 V DVB-S2, SR 23.000, FEC 8/9 This change to the ITV1 HD Granada frequency means that it cannot be added manually to the Sky HD and Sky+HD boxes Other channels list.

Does a Sky HD digibox or a Freesat HD set top box really improve UK TV reception in Spain?

Yes. To an extent.
For BBC 1 HD, BBCHD, ITV1 HD and C4HD, the signal from the satellite is stronger and available for longer than the satellite signal standard definition versions of the same channels.

This can mean that if you are losing standard defintion BBC1 regions early in the evening, then the HD channel should be available 24/7 (of course this depends on your dish size and location.)

Sky HD Channels: In some areas the standard defintion versions of some Sky Movie and Sky SPorts channels can be restricted during the afternoon.

For example it is possible that Sky Sports 4 and Sky Sports News are not available for about an hour either side of 5pm, even on a 2.4m satellite dish. However, the HD versions of Sky Sport 4 and Sky Sports News are available 24/7, even on an 80cm satellite dish!

New Free HD channel available - NHK World HD

NHK World HD has now launched onto the Freesat & Sky epg's.

It is the first free to air HD news channels to launch in the UK - as Sky NEws HD is part of the Sky HD subscription package

On Freesat NHK World HD is on epg 209 (this replaces the standard defintion (SD) version on HD boxes)

On Sky HD boxes NHK World HD is on Sky channel 518 and the standard defintion (SD) version moving from 516 to 507

Channel 4 HD coming to Freesat in April (ie free to air and not free to view as it currently is)

Channel 4 and Freesat have announced that Channel 4 HD will launch on the subscription-free satellite platform in the spring.

It will be availabe Free to Air on freesat HD receivers from April 2011.

Channel 4 HD will become the fourth HD channel on Freesat, joining BBC One HD, the BBC HD channel and ITV1 HD.

Channel 4 HD launched on Sky in 2007 and has since become available on Virgin Media in summer 2009 and the Freeview HD platform in April last year.

It is unknown at the moment what the reception of C4HD will be for expats in Spain and the Costa Blanca, or if the Sky C4HD service will contimue.

The current C4HD service is available with a Sky card and even on a 80cm satellite dish here in Spain.

It is currently unknown if the freesat free to air version of C4HD will be the same (unlikely!), as per BBC1 and BBC HD (big satellite dish required and should be 24/7 coverage), or as per BBC2 England (partial coverage on a big satellite dish)
