ITV3 HD moves to the UK beam on Astra 2F

Today ITV3 HD has moved to the UK beam on Astra 2F.

ITV 3 HDs move from the European beam, may mean loss of this ITV 3 HD channel in some areas of southern Spain and Portugal. This is because the UK beam is harder to receive than the European beam.

Some ITV1 and ITV1HD regional variations change of frequencies

ITV Frequency changes this past week.

This past week some ITV1,ITV1+1 and ITV 1 HD regions have changed their frequencies.

Sky and Freesat boxes should not have to do anything, as the changes should be automatic.

Users of other satellite receivers will have to perform a rescan of the frequencies if they want to continue watching the affected regions.

Astra 2E News : Transfer of channels from 1N to 2E will take place "early February 2014"

Astra 2E News : According to SES, who own and operate the new Astra 2E UK TV satellite, the transfer of channels from 1N to 2E will take place "early February 2014"

Channels in this transfer will include BBC ITV C4 and Sky pay channels.

"The transfer will have no adverse implications for viewers in the UK and Ireland as the affected channels will continue to operate on the same frequencies and will be broadcast at the same, or slightly improved power levels, across the UK and Ireland"

So no changes in UK TV reception in Spain for a couple of months yes, despite what you may have heard on the rumour mill - probably from some "Not So Smart" TV box sellers!!

ITV keep Champions League highlights rights for 3 more years

Highlights of Champions League and Europa League matches will be shown on ITV until 2018 after agreeing a new deal with UEFA.

The deal guarantees coverage of the two competitions on free-to-air television for three years starting from the 2015/2016 season.

Each week during the competitions, ITV will show comprehensive highlights programmes covering all of the week's Champions League games on Wednesday nights and on Thursday nights for the Europa League.

ITV will also show highlights of both finals and the UEFA Super Cup, as part of the deal.

BT Sport recently paid close to £1bn for live rights for three years for the Champions League

Sky Sports and ITV to lose Champions League rights to BT Sports for £1bn..?

There are reports that BT Sports are in the final phases of negotiations to acquire the UK broadcast rights to UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches in a £1bn 3 year deal.

This would take the matches away from the current shared holders of Sky Sports and ITV from the 2014/15 season.

TVCatchUp to drop ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 services

ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 have won a high court ruling forcing controversial London-based website TVCatchUp to stop streaming more than 20 of their services.

Under the ruling TVCatchUp has been told it cannot stream certain ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channel, including ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, E4, Film4 and More4, on its web-based online service.

ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5's flagship channels will remain on the website due to section 73 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act, which allows certain qualifying services to be retransmitted - although the three channels are not allowed to be streamed on mobile devices. The ruling means the disappearance of popular digital channels including ITV2, E4 and 5*, as well as any +1 timeshift streams.

TVCatchup is continuing to display the channels, but each icon merely redirects to the broadcasters' own live streams hosted on their individual websites.

TVCatchUp, which earlier this month added catchup TV to its offering of live streaming services, posted a statement on its website acknowledging the changes to its operation following the ruling.

"ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 welcome this decision," said the broadcasters in a joint statement. "It is a significant vindication for this action that the judge has ruled 21 of our channels are to be removed from the TVC website. This result will help protect the substantial investment broadcasters make in content and is a clear message to those who seek to infringe our copyright or use our content in an illegal capacity."

TVCatchUp has the right to appeal against the verdict. But lawyers consider the decision to be a major victory for UK broadcasters, which have been concerned about TVCatchUp's copyright infringement since as far back as 2007.

"The high court has finally confirmed that TVCatchUp must cease streaming all of the claimant broadcasters' channels on its service on mobile networks and all of the non public service channels, such as ITV2 and E4, on the internet," said Nick Swimer, partner at Reed Smith. "Whilst TVCatchUp may continue to stream the main public service channels on the internet, the high court indicated that the legal loophole which allows TVCatchUp to do this should be closed by the UK government, as it is not compatible with European law."

In March, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5's case against TVCatchup was ruled upon by Europe's highest court.

The European court of justice ruled that websites that retransmit live TV over the internet without permission from broadcasters are in breach of copyright.

Loss of UK TV channels in Spain - some questions and answers

With all the recent gossip, rumours, and expat bar chat, about the possible loss of UK TV in Spain, and the threat of the UK satellite TV channels “going off the air in Spain”, I hope this quick question and answer post can help with some explanations about what is happening.

Why are we losing reception of out UK TV channels?

Astra 2F: UK TV satellite update - loss of channels in Spain?

Astra 2F Update 07/12/2012 :

According to to the phone calls and email from worried people, Spain will lose all BBC and ITVs on the 16th December...but no-one can provide any evidence of this....or where this date of the 16th December has come from.
My view: it is probably nothing to do with BBC and ITVs.
a) It could be the date where some of the Sky channels move from their satellite (Astra 2B) onto the new Astra 2F satellite. Reception will vary as these channels may go onto the UK beam, or European beam...if Sky really want to keep expats paying and the revenue coming in, they will be on the European beam
b) It could be the date that Sky close changes to their system, so there is no disruption to TV over Xmas.
c). SES, who own and operate the satellites, specifically said that on the 4th only 5 frequencies would move from Astra 1N to the new Astra 2F, and that would complete this stage of migration. So maybe the remaining frequencies on Astra 1N that carry BBC and ITV will not move to 2F, but to the next new satellite, 2E, after it is launched Q1 2013...
d) No mention from anywhere by SES about the 16th...
No-one outside Astra and the broadcasters will know until it happens.
