Spanish TV channels - changing freqencies

If you have lost your TDT Spanish TV channels, then this may be due to the fact that many of them have moved to new frequencies! And the old frequencies have been switched off (or will be by tomorrow!)

This is due to the fact that the range of frequencies they used to be transmitted from has to be cleared to make way for mobile 3g and 4g services.

For most people, simply performing a "rescan" on your TDT receiver or TV should bring in the Spanish TV channels on their new frequencies.

If it does not, then maybe you are one of the few unlucky ones who are in a community who has not yet updated the systems at the "head end".

Andalucía TV - no longer available on satellite

The loss of Andalucía TV has caused uproar among dish owners, upset about the loss of the satellite TV signal.
Andalucía TV was available free to air on Hispasat 1E (at 30 degrees West) and Astra 1L (at 19.2 degrees East).
Andalucía TV was a regional TV channels for Spain, and carried programming from Canal Sur TV and Canal Sur 2, two other local SPanish TV channels.
Radio Televisión de Andalucía, that operates Andalucía TV, said that its programmes would be available via the Ono, Telecable and Movistar cable TV / IPTV networks.

Spanish TV is due for a few changes in the next few months.

Several Spanish TV channels, that you receive via a TV aerial, are schedule to change frequencies.

This is due to their current frequencies due to be sold off to mobile phone operators for 3G and 4G.

TDT - Nine Spanish TV channels to close in May 2014

A total of nine Terrestrial Digital Television channels in Spain are set to close down by May 6th 2014.
This is a result of a 2012 Supreme Court ruling that cancelled out the concession of additional channels to existing broadcasters on the grounds that the concession was made without a public bid and that new operators were therefore deprived of a chance to join the market.
Channels closing down include:

• La Sexta 3. Movie-based channels with a March audience share of 1.6 percent.
• Xplora. Hardcore Pawn, in its 10th season, is the most popular program.
• Nitro. Channel airs shows such as Law And Order and The A Team.
• La Siete. Specializes in Latin American soaps.
• Nueve. Re-runs of the most successful shows aired on Telecinco and Cuatro.
• Net TV. Teleshopping.
• Veo TV.

New TDT HD Channel - TDP HD - Teledeporte HD

The Spanish national broadcaster RTVE have launched a new HD channel on TDT.

Teledeporte HD has been launched this December.

Teledeporte is the TVE channel dedicated to sport, showing many live sports including football, cycling and Olympics.

Teledeporte HD is a simulcast of the existing Teledeporte channel.

Teledeporte HD becomes the second RTVE HD channel, after TVE HD.

Teledeporte HD can be found on the same frequency as Teledeporte and TVE HD - in many areas this is "Multiplex 22" - frequency 482 MHz.

TDT is the Spanish digital TV system available via a TV aerial. Essentially it is the Spanish version of the UKs Freeview (UK Freeview is not available in Spain!)

Police evict RTV (TV Valencia) staff in Spain after closure of station

Liquidators escorted by police are evicting staff from a public TV station in the Spanish city of Valencia, after an order to shut it down.

They moved in after staff at the loss-making station defied the closure order by the regional government and continued broadcasting.

Valencia's government took the decision to close RTVV after losing a court battle over staff cuts.

It is the first regional TV station to be closed down as austerity bites.

Marca TV on Spanish TV to close down?

Spain's Marca TV to close down

Spanish sports channel Marca TV is closing down on 1 July, according to vertele.com, as it has become unprofitable for Unidad Editorial to run.

The original intention was to rent it to a major American company, but a recent ruling of the Spanish supreme tribunal has made this solution impossible. Now, the most probable future for the Marca TV signal will be a home shopping channel, probably owned by QVC.

The contract between Unidad Editorial and the channel ends on 30 June and it is unlikely that it will be renewed. Last year Marca TV was on the verge of closing due to lack of finances and was possibly going to be sold to Real Madrid TV, but Unidad Editorial finally decided to bet on the sports channel for one more year. This seems unlikely to happen now, however, as Marca TV has already sold the broadcasting rights of La Liga Adelante to RTVE and the rights to La Liga BBVA to Mediaset.

Digital TV re-tuning next year MORE than 300,000 communities of residents in the Valencia Region will have to pay in the region of €600 sometime over the next 12 months to have their TV antennas retuned so that they can pick up digital (TDT) transmissions. Two years after the analogue signal was switched off in Spain, the government is forcing property owners to pay to retune because it made a mistake when the TDT signal was first allocated. On January 1, 2014, the current TDT signal will be switched off - one year before the rest of the EU.

The affected frequencies have been sold to provide more frequency capacity for the 4G / LTE mobile broadband technology. It is thought that the "auctioning off" of theswe frequencies will result in an income of about 12,000 million euros (about 1% of GDP).

The frequencies of 790 megahertz (MHz) to 862 MHz are are currently used for the Spanish digital television channels, ranging from 61 to 69. With recent advances in encoding and compression techology of television signals, this will mean that there hsould be no reduction or loss of Spanish Digital Television channels.

This was one of the greatest fears of the change, as it was initially thought that there could have been a 50% reduction in the number of current channels.

Belarus v Spain - World Cup Qualifier - not on TV!!

Spanish soccer fans are in danger of missing the national team's World Cup 2014 qualifier away to Belarus later on Friday as no television broadcaster has agreed to pay the price set by rights holders Sportfive to show the match in Spain.

Mediaset Espana's Telecinco channel typically broadcasts the world and European champions' away matches but by Friday morning had failed to reach a deal with Sportfive, part of France's Lagardere media group.

Mediaset's director of sports Jose Javier Santos told Spanish radio on Thursday that Sportfive's original asking price was three million euros ($3.88 million) and that had later been cut to 1.5 million euros.

Mediaset's offer was "a long way from that", he said, adding that as far as he knew no other broadcaster was bidding.

Local media reported it would be the first time a Spain World Cup qualifier had not been shown on national TV.

A Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) official, who was not identified by name, was quoted as saying in As sports daily on Friday that they hoped a deal was still possible.

The situation had arisen because declining advertising revenue and the economic crisis had reduced the amount of money broadcasters can spend on buying the rights to sports events, the official added.

"It worries me that people in Spain might not be able to see the match and follow their national team and it would leave a bad taste," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque told a news conference in Minsk on Thursday.

Can I receive Spanish TV using my Sky digibox?

Simply no.

Firstly Spanish TV is now digital. It is transmitted terrestrially. Sky boxes do not have a digital terrestrial tuner. Sky boxes only have an analogue terrestrial tuner. So you cannot receive Spanish TV using my Sky digibox in Spain if you connect it to a TV aerial in Spain.

Secondly, a Sky box cannot manage other encryption services. Most Spanish channels on satellite use a different encryption system to that used by Sky. So the Sky box cannot physically read a viewing card used to encrypt Spanish satellite TV.

A Sky box is designed to boot up and start to work using data from the UK TV satellites at 28 east. However, Spanish TV is transmitted from Astra 19.2 East and Hispasat 30 West, which do not carry the data required to boot up a Sky digibox.

If you want to watch Spanish TV via satellite then you will require a Canal+ dish, box and subscription.

Televisión Española is to air a 'short but symbolic' series of bullfights after new rightwing government took control of its board. Live bullfighting is returning to Spain's public broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE) after six years of viewers being unable to watch, in real time, the last few minutes of a bull's life.

A fight at the bullring in Valladolid is set to be broadcast on 5th September, allowing bullfight fans to see half a dozen animals fought and killed on the sand of the city's arena.

The decision to show live bullfighting comes after the conservative People's Party (PP) of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took control of the broadcaster's board and changed its senior management.
TVE will not pay the three bullfighters involved or the company that runs the Valladolid bullring, though it will bear the cost of setting up the multi-camera broadcast.Top matadors Julián López – known as El Juli – José María Manzanares and Alejandro Talavante have waived their royalties as part of a campaign to stop growing anti-bullfight sentiment that has already succeeded in getting the practice banned in the autonomous eastern region of Catalonia.

“TVE believes that the potential audience that might be attracted to this lineup is, in itself, a sufficient reason for broadcasting it,” a spokesman said. “This will be the first of a short but symbolic series of bullfights … which Spain's public television channel plans to programme,” TVE added.
bullfight1TVE pulled bullfighting from its schedules last year, saying it contravened its code of conduct for programmes before Spain's late evening watershed hour. Bullfights mostly start at 6pm or 7pm, falling into children's viewing hours and so raised issues of protecting children from the bloodshed. However, furious fans had accused the broadcaster of shunning a key part of Spanish popular culture. “This means that TVE, which belongs to us all, will deprive us of something that over the centuries has formed part of the cultural patrimony of many Spaniards, both of the political right and the left,” columnist Andrés Amorós wrote in the conservative daily ABC.

But Rajoy's PP, which swept to power in November, is involved in a controversial reform of the broadcaster and is accused of removing senior journalists who are seen as too leftwing.

The section preventing children from watching live bullfights was removed from its code of conduct earlier this year. “Management has acted accordingly,” a senior TVE source said.

TVE had not banned bullfighting completely, and continued to cover it on late night television and radio programmes devoted exclusively to what fans consider to be an art form – newspapers cover it in their arts pages.

Regular live broadcasts of the major bullfighting festivals from Madrid, Seville and elsewhere stopped in 2006, after TVE was priced out of the market by private broadcasters.

bullfighter“Now the bullfighting lobby seems prepared to do anything in order to bring live fights back to our public television channel, even if that means trampling over European Union television rules,” the Animalist party, which lobbies against bullfighting, said. TVE sources denied that any such rules were being broken.

Anti-bullfighting supporters are also raising the issue that ‘Spain’s National Art’ has been exempted from the IVA/VAT increase which comes into effect this Saturday, 1st September 2012. The IVA paid on other cultural tickets sees IVA rise from 8 percent to 21 percent. For Bullfighting it stays at the lower rate.

Australian Grand Prix coverage on Sky Sports F1 & BBC Sport

The 2012 Formula 1 season gets underway with the Australian Grand Prix over the weekend of 16-18 March with exclusively live coverage on Sky Sports F1 HD and comprehensive highlights on the BBC.

The 2012 Australian Grand Prix is also the first to be broadcast under the terms of the new television deal which sees Sky Sports broadcasting all 20 Grand Prix live, and the BBC broadcasting 10 live with comprehensive highlights of all other races.

The Sky F1 team consists of former BBC faces Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz with David Croft in the commentary box. The Sky team also includes Simon Lazenby, Georgie Thompson, Anthony Davidson and Natalie Pinkham. Spanish government to rethink RTVE funding

The recently elected Government of the PP in Spain is on the verge of announcing a reduction of the budget of state broadcaster RTVE by €200 million.

The news was announced by Cristobal Montoro, Minister of Finance and Public Administration and the €200 million cut back will fall within the total €442 million that the ministry intends to cut.

Following budget cuts of €200 million, the Spanish government has said it is now reviewing the financial situation of the state broadcaster RTVE.

The situation of the broadcaster is ‘serious’ and the government is considering re-introducing selling commercial airtime as a serious option.

The current model of financing the broadcaster was introduced by the former socialist government and is based an a special tax of 0.9% slapped on the turnover of telecom companies and private broadcasters. This type of tax, which Spain introduced after France pioneered the idea, has come under heavy criticism from Brussels.

In addition to swingeing cuts to its budget, as decreed by Spain's new conservative government, it now seems inevitable that national public broadcaster Corporación RTV is to lose a number of channels.

As reported yesterday in Rapid TV News, TVE’s budget is to be reduced by €200 million and now in a futher indignity TVE may be forced toi decide between cutting channels or return to including commercial advertising on its programming.

Other avenues that the Corporation could take include having to sell some of its sporting rights such as the crown jewels of the UEFA Champions League's rights or even the ones pertaining to the London Olympics.

Will my Freeview box work in Spain?

Many UK Freeview boxes do work in Spain and you can use a Freeview receiver / set top box in Spain.

The UK Freeview receiver will only receive the Spanish digital TV channels.

A UK Freeview set top box will NOT be able to receive UK TV channels like BBC ITV C4 and Five in Spain.

This is beacuase the Freeview box connects to a TV aerial, and in Spain only SPanish TV vchannels are available via a TV aerial.


Just like in the UK where you can only receive the UK Freeview channels via a TV aerial and not the SPansih TV channels in the UK via a TV aerial.

However, there may be some problems with using a UK Freeview set top box in Spain.

Firstly, you must ensure the box can scan frequency 69 – a frequency that is not used in the UK but it is in Spain.

Also UK boxes may not be able to change programmes into their original language as some UK boxes are programmed to look for English, Welsh and Gaelic language “tags”, where as in Spain they use different language tags like “Dos” or “VO” (Version Original), or “Multi” or “Und”, SET does use an “English” tag.

Can I get Spanish TV on Freesat in Spain?

Simply No.
Freesat is a UK TV service offering UK free to air channels.
You can also not get any Spanish TV hcannel on Sky TV in SPain either.
TVE International used to be the only Spanish TV channel on Sky TV , but that was removed last year.
